best winter tire size for a 17" oz superleggera? tirerack suggests 225/45-17...
...but that's for the ultraleggera. the superleggera seems to be out of production these days (or not sold at TR). I figure it's a very similar wheel.
is that too low profile for winter usage?
I'm thinking about going with the Dunlop SP Winter Sport 3D.

Those were 17X8 wheels, so the next size more narrow 205/50R17 would not work.
Stick with 225/45R17 in this case.
This is actually a very common size to run on winter tires these days.
If you're trying to maximize snow traction snow/ice traction in this size, consider the Blizzak WS-60. For more of a balanced between snow traction and dry road handling, check out the Dunlop Winter Sport 3D and Blizzak LM25.<ul><li><a href="http://www.tirerack.com/a.jsp?a=AR8&url=/winter/index.jsp">winter</a></li></ul>

I live in the SF bay area and am "winterizing" for tahoe. Obviously most of my driving will be in dry/rain with the weekend trips being in snow. I was almost thinking about going A/S, but the winter tires seem to have decent dry performance these days while providing much better snow/ice grip.
Any other thoughts?

I'd agree. If you move to one of the 'performance' snows like the LM25 Blizzak or Dunlop 3D I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at the good levels or dry grip along with very good snow traction.<ul><li><a href="http://www.tirerack.com/a.jsp?a=AR8&url=/winter/index.jsp">winter</a></li></ul>
