Default Bigger is rarely better

I cant say for your specific car. But I do find that the rally serious racers among other marques, specifically Porsche, run smaller wheels and tires. Big, R-compound tires.

Big wheels are needed - mostly to clear brakes.
But they are also heavy - unsprung, spinning mass heavy. So bigger really isn't always better.

So my opinion is to run stock - or stock diameter but even wider. With any of the really good r-compound tires. Victoracers. Pilot Cups. v700s. Hoosiers. etc. etc.

Keep in mind that grip is nto free. Grip is pretty much inversely proportional to treadwear. Most r-compounds are 60-100. Ouch.

I run stock on my 986.

Default Thanks for the info...I plan to keep the 18" wheels but am debating if I should go

R compound. 80% of my driving is to and from the track or on track.

Tires I am considering are GY Eagle F1, Advan 048, Mich Sport Cup.

Default It depends on how experienced you are; how much you want to spend, and hwo much you care about times

Most people I talk to say do your learning on regular tires and your competing on r-compound. They stick better, but wear faster, and get you into trouble at higher speeds and g-forces.

So, I have track tires. But guess what? They're just a 2nd set of good street tires ( Pirelli p-zeros) on 17" rims. They exceed my abilities.

Default Do a search on the GY F1's for track use.

Larry posted an experience about soft sidewalls on these tires not holding up well on a track with a heavy car.

Default I did several track events on F1 GSD3. Held up well.

This was with my Mk IV Jetta, though, so not entirely apples-to-apples. Still a heavy car.

I've got Falken Azenis RT-615 on the S4 now. They are unbelievably grippy. I haven't been this excited about a tire in years. I'll have them out on track for the first time next month at Thunderhill.
