Default quattro and winter tires vs. quattro and all season tires

Hi Guys,
I just picked up a 2004 A4 1.8t quattro. My first quattro so I have no winter experience driving it. Right now I have Hankook Ventus V4es 235/40-18. They're all-seasons.

So I'm asking all you quattro drivers out there: What's your experience with all-season's vs. winter tires in the snow? I live in Ontario, and go snowboarding a lot in our snowbelt so roads are white for most of the winter. I also do the odd roadtrip to Tremblent near the end of the season. Should I invest in snow tires or does the quattro with all-season's do an adequate job of getting you through the winter?

Thanks for all your help

Default Are you more concerned with emergency accelleraton or emergency decelleration?

Most accidents are because people cannot stop in time. quattro does nothing for that. Good tires do. Get the snows.

3rd - if you get a lotta snow, much better off w/ dedicated winter tires

That is a very good point that many people do not consider.

Default Never had snow tires, but I am getting them this season

I've slid on some roads where there was just a little amount of snow. Quattro alone didn't keep the car from sliding because all 4 tires lost traction. Then there was my bad (and dumb) experience last winter in a Mazda 3). I'm getting snow tires this year and hope not to have any problems due to the road conditions.

And thanks to Gary for helping me with ordering the wheels I'll be using for the winter tires. (I'll be placing the order today.)

Default Got to say I run All Seasons on the RS and snow tires for the winter

and I am not a skier - but if you have to drive in your kind of weather - for sure get snows.

Default quattro will be better in the snow than 2WD on the same tires, but quattro doesn't help w/ stopping

and only helps when cornering when you're on the trottle. If you've been driving on A/S tires with a 2WD car then quattro will be an improvement in the snow with similar tires. Quattro with snow tires is truely awesome in the snow, but you give up dry and wet grip and snow tires can be quite squirrely if you try to push them into corners.

I run A/S tires on my Audi in the winter and my wife runs winter tires on hers. We live in SE MI across the border from southern Ontario.

My thinking is that there are only a few days a year that the roads are snow covered. I drive more carefull then and have the handling benefit of a high performance A/S tire for when the roads are dry or just wet, which is the vast majority of the time.

My wife likes the security of the snow tires when the roads get bad and her car is an absolute tank when the roads are snow covered. She's willing to give up the handling of a good high performance A/S tire for the grip in the snow.

It all depends on how much snow you get and if you value dry/wet grip or snow grip more.

Default Re: 3rd - if you get a lotta snow, much better off w/ dedicated winter tires

Thanks guys, I'm currently on the hunt for some winter rubber. My Passat on snow tires (Dunlop Graspic DS-2) was seemingly unstoppable and very predictable, even on the worst of days, and we had some for the record books last year. And although I've driven many winters prior to that on A/S tires with no accidents, I've had a few moments where I could have been in serious trouble so I thank my lucky stars. Yeah I'm not so naive to think that quattro = never lose control, however I figured it's significantly better than FWD. I'm a careful driver in general, I shake my head at the drivers that drive those first days of snow like its a perfect mid summer's day. Honestly, I just can't wrap my head around it, what are they thinking??? Anyways, thanks all for the input. Cheers.
