Changing '08 RS6 Avant Wheels/Tires
Car just arrived... awesome, other than the ride quality being a bit harsh for my wife and infant son in the back seat. Two questions: 1) How much softer ride can I expect just by changing wheels/tires (currently stock 275/35R20)? 2) Any recommendations? Thanks in advance...

Just changed 19"s for 18"s....... Huge improvement...
in ride quality with little difference in handling. The 255/40/19 Yoko Advan S.4. were great in all conditions, the 245/45/18 Bridgestone RE960 are every bit as good & much quieter.

Like others said, going to a smaller rim will help out a lot with the ride. Depending on the tire brand, that could also aid in getting a softer ride for your car as well.

Re: Going from 20s to 18s should reduce the sharp impacts significantly.
Just talked with Audi dealer... apparently, I can only go from 20s (275/35R20) down to 19s (255/40R19) given the size of the brakes. Do you think moving to 19s would be worthwhile? If so, any specific tire brands which give a softer ride? Thanks...

Could be. Check, nto all wheels are created equal. Much more inside:
You might check with Gary at Tire Rack, or if you are local, Chris at Euro-Tire for wheels that clear the brembos in 18". Feel lucky that you have an RS6 :-) This is a cost of pleasure.
Next, sure 20->19 will be an improvement w/r/t ride. Its fairly linear.
I did some quick math. Here are 4 sizes that are close in OD. The 255/40-19 size listed is frankly too small - 2% under size, resulting in rougher ride and possible rim damage. Bzzt to the originator of that.
Here are the numbers:
The last 4 numbers in each row are:
Diameter; % stock; Circumference; % stock
275 35 96.25 3.79 20 27.58 1.00 86.60 1.00
255 40 102.00 4.02 19 27.03 0.98 84.88 0.98
255 45 114.75 4.52 19 28.04 1.02 88.03 1.02
265 40 106.00 4.17 19 27.35 0.99 85.87 0.99
265 45 119.25 4.69 19 28.39 1.03 89.14 1.03
255/45-19 is 2% oversize and 265/45 is 3% oversize/. Both reasonable numbers. All my tires are about 2.5% oversize to better protect my rims from New Jersey potholes.
