Default DeWalt cordless impact wrench: can anyone confirm that...

the DeWalt DW059K-2 18-Volt Ni-Cad 1/2-inch Cordless Impact Wrench is the one with the variable speed trigger?

Are there alternatives that I should also consider in the $250-$300 range? I've seen Mikita and Milwaukee mentioned as well.

Sadly, this is what I'm asking for as my wedding gift from my bride to be ;^) She's getting diamonds, and I want a power tool...

Default it does not have a variable speed trigger...

...unless by variable speed, you mean forward and reverse ;-)

i think some of the lower models are variable speed but they dont have as much torque...

i have one and it is great! it has some serious torque...usually when i'm putting wheels on, i run it until the hammer starts to hit, then relase the trigger...it has absolutely no problem breaking nuts loose...

mine has gotten a ton of use and is probably one of the best/most used tools i have...i swap wheels/tires several times a day at race weekends and have never had a problem with it...

Default I've had a Craftsman 18v for four years, no problems

Agree with David White; it's probably the best & most useful tool I've ever bought; it breaks lug nuts without any problems, and I can usually get about an entire race weekend out of it without worrying about the battery.

I haven't used many other ones, but the craftsman does have a variable speed trigger, and gives you a really precise degree of control over the speed. I feel totally comfortable using it even to thread my lug bolts.

The other thing you should get is a Torque Stick; get one matched to your wheel torque, and it gets it pretty close, automatically. I always doublecheck it with a real torque wrench.

Default A+

Good piece, got one this spring and used it racing all summer. Had no problem knocking the biggest lug nuts off the race cars...kinda nice not having to drag a hose out and hook up the nitrogen bottle every time I wanted to change a tire. Can't beat it for the $$$.

A+.
