Steve S or Pat or those w/ Infineon skillz....need your interpretation of T1/T2
I've been up there 3 times now and I swear I've taken T1 a different way each lap!!
Here's how I *think* it should go:
-4th gear front straight, lift gently at the first kink (around where pit-out wall ends) to scrub off a little speed.
-back on steady throttle as you sweep left, staying 2/3 of the way out from the radius of the track width
-try to get car pointed straight, towards left berm up ahead, as road starts to climb (right before overpass)
-lift completely once car is pointed mostly straight at this point; climb will scrub much speed
-this is where I can't make up my mind: do I stay off the brakes, downshift to 3rd early for extra engine braking and take 3rd gear into T2?
or, do I add some brake while on the left berm, and downshift 4th-to-2nd for T2?
certainly I feel 'racier' going to 2nd and more power out of T2. but I don't know if it's truly faster.
anyway, this track truly fascinates me, moreso than any other I've driven. and that's only 2 out of 11 great corners to try and figure out!!
Here's what I do....4th gear flat out into 1, lift right after the hot pit entrance and straighten the car out, turn in so that the right tires barely go over the rumble strip and stab the brakes while downshifting into third, then turn into T2 (late apex) and track out to the rumble strip on the exit of T2.
If you don't need to hit your brake while downshifting into 3rd going into T2, you aren't going fast enough.
Don't go to second. My rule is..Don't ever shift unless you have to. Aim for the T2 berm..and you will most likely move to just off it...that is where I like to be..definitely track all the way on the exit of T2.
Pic of me in turn #2 back in 2000. This was the old T2 though.
