Default Why doesn't BMW or Opel run in DTM series?

have they run in the past? seems like a gaping hole; sort of like (excuse the analogy) if Ford or Dodge didn't run in NASCAR.

Default BMW pulled out a LONG time ago. Opel pulled out a few years ago. It's all about the money.

I work in DTM as a photographer. It's the best racing series in the world. F1 technology, door banging driving, incredible racing.

It just costs too much money to run this European only series.

Audi said they put 50 million Euro into supporting their R10 cars and 255 million into their four DTM factory cars last year.

The prices are equitable with each other.

It's very sad it's only a two car series, but the racing is still great.

PS - Nice sig photo. Infineon, I assume. Great colors, framing, saturation, too bad the wheels are frozen. Could have been parked. My biggest motorsports photo pet pieve.

Default GM pulled Opel out...damn them. BMW doesn't like being shown up on their home turf. ;)

Aussie V8s is also a two car series, but that doesn't stop it from being some of the best racing out there.

I'd rather DTM were less F1 though.

Default I've photographed Aussi V8's as well. 2000 with TWR. Awesome series. I like the DTM tech

that is oh so close to F1.

Yep, GM pulled the plug at the end of 2004 and was prohibitive of private teams running their cars.

Alfa was there for a while, too, but found it too pricey.

I really wish it was a four or six car series. Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Opel, Alfa, Volvo, Jaguar, Maserati, Aston Martin and the Japanese marks could be involved, but few have the *****.

Default yes, been watching the season (re)broadcasts on Speed

I'm a tiny bit put off by the non quattro-ness of the Audis. Not that I don't appreciate the reasoning behind their choice of powertrain (it may even be a series regulation?). It just seems a little odd.

Yes, sig is Sears. "Head On Photos" is the culprit!

The series mandates rear wheel drive and a 4 liter V8. They're all tube frame silhouette cars

Default Yes and no. 4.0L & RDW mandated Series requires base tube frame structure, but they take base

to a minimum. Both 2006 chassis have single tubes from to rear plus the roll cage. Audi says roughly 88% of their base chassis is CF. You don't see the tubes other than the cage, really. They escape the rules by using minimal tubing to "support" CF moncoques. They essentially skirt the rules.

Additionally, RWD was mandated after Audi was kicking *** in DTM with quattro.

Lastly, think about how goofy it is for Audi to be forced to race in a configuration with which they don't even make cars!

OT - Duncan, which car were you running on Wed at Infineon?

Default I was going up to shake down the 997 I'm driving in Koni Challenge, though we only put in a handful

of laps. We pulled up at the track at around 3:40, which doesn't make for much of a test day at a track that closes at 4:15! The Stasis guys were just wrapping things up when we showed up.
