Track wheels/tires BT: I'd like to get a set for the avant this year. 17's or 18's?
So, with price being equal, should I go with 245/40-17 or 235/40-18? I've never owned a set of R compounds. Would a 225 width be enough for the track? Do R compunds tend to run wide so would rubbing be a big issue? I have rolled the fenders.

The 245/40-17 are the close to stock diameter and would give the most grip. I definately like the looks of 18s over 17 but for track use I guess I shouldn't care.
There has been come complaint of the finish of the Fliks being cheap and some paint peeling, but I'll be using them 4-5 times a year so it's not a big deal.
I was ready to pull the trigger on Flik Ftds in 17x8 with 235/40-17 RT-615s until I read this.
Would 245/45-17s also work?

A 245/40-17 is wider but the overll diameter is about 1% shorter or 1/3" shorter. Generally the rubbing issues on the B5 S4 comes from a height issue. If you have rolled the fenders, this should not even be an issue.
A 245/45-17 will be 2.8% taller or about 3/4" taller. You will defiantely be rubbing.
I had rubbing issues with a 235/40-18 tire (1.7% taller) but not with 245/35-18 tires (1% smaller).
