Default Snow in Seattle! Good and bad news(Help requested)

It was the first real snow in the Seattle area this morning bringing the first opportunity to test my new Pirellis. They handled great. There was Ice on the road and many accidents and cars gone off the road where we live on a hill. The A4 had no problems and at 30-40mph no slippage.
However, when backing out of my garage I felt some grinding on the turn. And coming down our straight empty hill I thought i'd see how slamming the brakes would do. Well, I pushed the brakes beyond where I normally would for a graceful stop but not too overly hard and felt some metallic grinding and it pushed back against my foot. The brakes worked fine when used delicately and I made it to work. However, the problem persisted if I pushed the brake just a bit beyond normal.
Anyone else experience this? I'm leaving on a long trip tomorrow and am worried about taking the car(which was part of the big attraction of the trip). I believe the cold has something to do with this(this is the coldest it's been since I bought the car).
Would appreciate advice from any wise owners out there.
Thanks in advance.
Confused in Seattle
I believe the grinding you felt was an ABS
function. All of my European cars w/ ABS
to this (Saab, Volvo).
DaveG
99.5 2.8 QT on order
I am in Seattle as well and I agree the Pirellis work pretty good in the snow. You should not be hearing metallic grinding when you turn or when you use the breaks. The push back you are feeling on the pedal is the ABS kicking in and is normal. I drove to Mt Baker a couple of weeks ago and the ABS kicked in going down around those hairpins in the snow a couple of times.
I would stop by the dealer before you go on your trip(Barrier service is open today I believe)if you are hearing metal against metal..I have noticed nothing like that on my quattro driving in the snow. The only thing I can think of is that the discs were unusually cold or rusty??
mg
98 1.8TQMS 17" TSW Hock's /w Pirelli 7000ss

If you've never experienced ABS before...now you have! It's perfectly normal

Default Phew ( more )......

So does this happen only when road traction is low. There was a lot of snow on the ground. I've tried slamming the brakes in the dry before and not experienced this. So is this due more to the ABS/EDL interaction(yes I've read the posts over the last couple of days ) ) rather than ABS by itself?
Thanks for your help guys.

Default Just ABS!

It's pretty hard to get the ABS to activate in the dry, especially with sticky tires. You really have to push the pedal hard to do that. If it's icy though, it doesn't take much. I know it's a strange feeling and sound, but I think part of the reason they make it that way is to warn you, as a driver, that you are pushing or exceeding your limits and you need to slow down. BTW, I'm in the Seattle area too, and I'm not looking forward to going out on the road with all the scary people! :-( Have fun!
Charles
Default In snow, ABS... [more]

I've found that in partially solidified snow, I'll get a grinding sound while driving through. In reality, it should just be the tires crackling through the snow itself. When ABS starts its thing, it compounds the sound/feeling/etc. Also realize that the semi-metallic pads in the A4 are sensitive to heat, cold, and their own age (the less worn in they are, the more sound I had). Everything sounds normal.
-josh
98.5 2.8qms

Well, only about an inch at my place. My girlfriend and I went over into the Woodinville area and they had a couple inches there. We saw a SUV wrapped around a telephone pole and generally a mess on any of the hills. Tow truck drivers are loving it tonight. The Pirelli SS 7000 do ok in the snow, but are no dedicated snow tire. They are a good compromise for me with many wet streets and few trips for snowboarding each week.
NeilM

98 Avant Sport Tip
