brake and odometer message questions

hey all,
question1: i just changed the oil on my wife's 98 2.8Q. when i was about to reset the 'oil' message on the odometer, i noticed the odometer had a different display. it now shows "1n 1". Anybody know what this stands for? (i'll post a picture in a few minutes)

question2: i drove the car last night for the forst time this week and the brake pedal was VERY spongy. the wife doesn't notice things like this (chalk it up to pregnancy i guess), but i was like "WHOA WHAT"S THIS?!?!" While i was changing the oil, i checked out the front rotors. they don't look like anything weird's happening, but i wonder if one of the pads went south.....

any insights would be extremely helpful. please email if possible.
does anyone know where i can find a listing of messages and their meanings online?

IN1 message indicates "Inspection" is due...

...see your Owner's Manual for details (there is also an IN2. Nothing to worry about, just schedule the car for maintenance.
