I pull and I pull... and it is about 1/2 inch off, but I can't get it out of the clips!

Default yes. remove front wheels and wheel well liners. then you can pry the clips...

with a small prybar or flathead screwdriver. Have someone help you though, you'll need it.

Default the cover has cleared the wheel well liners...

I was hoping to NOT have to take off the wheels...

the APR instuctions for the engine mount install say just pull up and out... arg... this is a PITA...

hmmm....

Default I didn't like the amount of force required by just pulling, so I removed

the wheels and well liners. The engine mount was by far the least-fun to do.

Default Yeah. it was as PITA with mine.

You need to be sure to remove all the things holding it on. There are some really long bolts up front - which it sounds like you found.

Then there are a whole number of plastic screws and rivets in the wheel wells. At least that how my 99 A4 was, the 01 wagon may have some differences.

Then there are some attachments to the plastic skid plate.

NOW you can mess with the hidden burly clips that attach the wraparound sides of the bumper cover to the body, these live just in front of the wheels and allow about 1/2 inch forward motion... the picture in my shop manual (for the 99 again) shows you having to simultanously pull outward and push downward to release. Then do the other side. I hand the hasse of freeing one, then having it snap back in when I worked the other. Ended up using two people and pulling MUCH harder "outward" before they release and allowed the thing to move forward.

Oh yeah, there's also the headlight washer hose, even if you don't have wipers on your heads, it's there.

(all info from my '99 experience...)

Default Stick your fingers in the body gap between the fender and bumper near the wheel well.....
