If I was an American I'd be pissed. Whatever happened to the separation fo Church and State?!?!?!

I flicked on Bush's inaugural address for one minute and all he did was thump his Bible.

It really doesn't upset most Americans.

There are many inferences to God in American politics. If you're gonna take away the bible at inaugurations, then you might as well mint new coins without "In God we trust" on them, and ask every president to refrain in saying "God bless America" after every speech. I think there's no problem with the bible thing and would absolutelly feel comfortable having the Koran if the president happened to be Muslum.

By the way, I'm far from any holy roller (haven't been to church in years). I just feel we gotta have some tradition at inaugurations. The bible Bush used is the same one George Washington used for America's first presidency.

Well, though not Audi related, the answer is: There is no separation of church and state in the United States. That is a myth. There is no mention of separation of church and state in the U.S. Constitution, which only prohibits the government from estabilshing a religion. Otherwise, all citizens are to have religious freedom, including the President. However, there are unfortunately those who would like to impose their anti-religious views on others.

Though some would like to have us believe otherwise, facts are that the founding fathers of the United States, and the framers of the U.S. Constitution, were influenced quite a bit by religion. This can be noted by the refereces to "God" in the Constitution, as well as other early documents. However, the framers also realized a person's right to not have a certain religion imposed upon him by the government (nor have the absence of religion imposed on him by the government). That's what "religious freedom" is all about.

The U.S. Constitution prohibits the establishment of religion, but does not prohibit the free exercise of religion by anyone, including elected politicians. The Constitution also does not guarantee anyone freedom from religion, meaning that it does not realize any right to not have to encounter another's religious beliefs (or lack thereof) in society.
