Subaru Outback VDC vs A4Avant 2.8L
Anycomments on the Outback VDC? Anyone drive it?

35K for the A4Avant 2.8 vs $32K for the Subie
I think A4 Avant is in a market segment where it considered as a spirited sportswagon with one direct competitor, BMW's 3-Series. Volvo's V40 quality is on other planet, so its not in the equation. I will pit VW Passat V6 4Motion wagon vs Outback H6 VDC as a fairer comparison.
Outback still has Subaru's typical plasticky interior despite they have already addressed in recent products. The quality feels better than H4 2.5 version but feels inferior to either Passat and A4. The Maintosh stereo looks like something designed in the 80s even if it sounds really nice. It handles relatively well. Excellent road feel and ride control. The engine has better torque response but its sluggish 4-speed auto kills all the fun. Despite the criticisms, its still a very well made car.
Passat V6 4Motion feels every inch like an Audi in terms of dynamics abilities and quality. Very Teutonic, you feel expensive and classy inside the cabin.
Audi DOES feel stiffer and better control over the Passat but since we don't have A4 Avant in Canada, Passat V6 4Motion will be the best alternative.
Good luck on your car shopping! :-)
