I found slim picking in 245/45, so I looked over alternate sizes and 235/50-18 popped up as +2% taller, and more abundant, plus a higher load rating than stock! So, I got 2 "new" and 2 nice 10/32" Eagle Sport to deal with, plus I also bought a set of Conti ControlContact. Both brands are $160+ each new, so by any metric, it is a good deal at $360/4.
Here's a pic of 235/50-18 sidewall height...
Looks good in height and tread width.
I love the Eagles, reportedly good in snow, and would be happy to stick with them, smooth as glass and stiff handling.
It sounds weird, but I usually put the opposite type of tire on for the suspension set-up. That is, a stiff suspension like an S4, I'd put a soft tire make it more compliant. Here the high and soft allroad, I'm going with stiff tires like these two. They fact the ride height is higher makes the stiff sidewall an even better choice.
Continental Control Contact Sport AS Review
Eagle Sport TR Staff Test, inc snow and ice...
Tire Test Results : Testing Value-Priced Ultra High Performance All-Season Tires
I have a set of Starfire WR in 245/45-18 that the PO put on. Pretty dreadful, dnw even as "summers", will try to get $200 for them at 9/32" Made by Cooper, ugh.
235 width def sharpens the steering, for sure.
