Default A4: Certainly a driver's car!! but a reliable car??

I LOVE my 2000 1.8T A4! I can't wait to get
behind the wheel every morning. However, driving
is only one part of the ownership experience.

With some 25k miles on my A4, I feel I have
had more than my fair share of time at the
dealer for non-maintenance related repairs;
namely:
- 3 blown headlights
- 2 engine coolant sensors (check engine)
- 1 Mass Air Flow sensor (check engine)
- 1 Emission relay/sensor (something about a
charcoal canister)

I've owned the car for 2 years and have had 5
unplanned trips to the dealer. Everytime I ask
the service guy if X (the problem of the day) is
common he says "oh yeah, we do this repair all
the time".

So my questions are:
- Is this experience unique to me?
- This is my first German car ... are the BMWs
and Mercs any more reliable?
- How does one get feedback back to Audi?

Just interested in other owner's stories.

Omar..

Default all of your problems are electrical...pretty common

but you won't see many blown trannies or other major components failing as much as other types of cars, IMO.

I thought Audi had more JD Power awards than BMW or Mercedes?

Default I've got a 98 with no real problems

A possible developing power steering issue, but other that that its been worry free. All high end cars have lots of electronics that will inevitably go bad sooner or later. The downside to your situation is Audi of America pretty much does not give a crap about your situation- just look at what Ed P's having to go through right now. AoA is back asswards right now.

Default Let's see.....

Heated mirrors (toasted, haven't replaced yet)
Wheel bearing
transmission(lost second gear)
ignition module (POS)
ignition switch
starter
clutch master/slave cylinder
control arm
dead battery

I think that's it....

all in the last 20K miles (about 8 months, car now has 80k miles on it) and out of my pocket, about $2500, and that's with free labor (myself)

Any takers on what's next?

Default My laundry list for my 99.5 A4 Avant.

- Heater Core replaced at 5k
- Coolant Temp. Sensor replaced at 11k
- Purge Valve replaced at 8k

I had two Honda's previously, the Civic Si needed a new tranmission (bad from the factory) at 3k. No other problems with that car or the CRX Si which I owned over the 35k miles I put on each of them.

Default That doesn't sound out of the ordinary.

37K miles on my car...
AC fan is going bad (squeaky)
Faulty Coolant Temp Sensor
Leaky Water Pump
Center Console Coming Apart
Leaky gasket around Secondary Air Inj. Solenoid

None of those problems have left me stranded, and all have been fixed during regular service intervals. All have also been covered under warranty. Had I paid for anything out of pocket, or had any of those repairs left me stranded, I'm sure I would feel differently. Believe it or not, I'm very happy with the car, and I accept these as the costs of ownership.
