Default A4 Which oil to put in when history is vague

After buying a 01 A4 1.8T with 167K, I have been reading forums.
I have no idea what oil is in the car and want to change it. How do I decide if it's synthetic or conventional and/or what should I use?
It sounds like there have been oil problems with the 1.8T in general
and that there is a best oil/weight/oil filter to use?

If you wish to follow the engine mfr's recommendation, any oil meeting VAG spec 502.00 works just fine. Mahle, MANN, Hengst, etc. are all good filters.

Welcome aboard, Porshce!

I appreciate your reply. I have done much reading. Mann gets my vote, it has been recommended by the majority of articles, but it's more than just the number 502.000, it's all about the design. I don't even know where to buy the others you mentioned in CA.

Porsche, if you want to really simply things, and if you have Walmart in CA, you could pick up Bosch filter #3976 and 5 quart jug of Mobil 1 0W40 for not too much money.

Personally, I only order oil filters on-line cuz I get the exact brand I want and for the lowest possible price.

I normally research something until I am as sure as it gets. I picked up a Mann filter locally for 7.35. Part of the problem is there are so many opinions on a given issue; but Mann stands out in the majority this time, thank you!
