Manual transmission, replace or fix?
So a couple of days ago I started having trouble of getting the car into the right gears, and later that day the reverse and 5th gear stopped working all together. As the next day progressed the gears 1-2 became harder to get into and sometimes resulted in being the 3rd and 4th gear. The gear lever can now be moved around A LOT in the same gear without being hindered.
I red that this could be the shift linkage that probably broke, but I'm just checking here if anyone has had the same problem or know anything about it before taking it to a dealership due to having little time to look at it myself.
And I'll state again that this is a 5 speed manual transmission on an audi a4 97'
Thanks in advance for any answers.

Find an audi or gearbox specialist as the dealer will be expensive.
Sounds like linkages to me. If it were selectors you would only loose one or a pair of gears, and if the gearbox is not making ugly noises its not the gears or bearings.
Good news is linkages are external to the box, so will be cheaper than it otherwise could be - may still require removal though.

If your issue is progressively getting worse and your shifting is sloppy, you can check your linkage bolts and shift cage for free and see if the cage is work or the bolts are backing out. You have to remove the gearshift surround and sound deadening material to get to the linkage bolts. See link.

Read through this thread, and take note of the part numbers. It looks like I made the last post, but all the good info is earlier: https://www.audizine.com/forum/showt...Rebuild-Thread
The nice thing is that all of this task can be done in the car (with the center console removed). I got the short shifter on Ebay for $38 and the rest of the parts from the dealer for $94.
