newbie question car overheating
I have a 1996 a4 Quattro that is overheating. I need a new one for which I have ordered but it's going to take four days.
on the bottom of the reservoir there looks to be like there's a nipple coming out the bottom. It looks like it should be attached to a hose and I don't know where that hose is or where it is supposed to go?
Any help?
I was also wondering where I could buy some manual so that I could have a complete set to work on the car as I have no idea what I'm doing on this model?
the car needs help and I eventually want to get an escort 2.7 liter turbo but I need to get this thing running and I recently went through a divorce and paying two mortgages and I can barely eat isn't life grand!

I believe that is the drain for the overflow. I do not have a 1996 but it is an overflow drain on other years. Has a simple hose about a foot long and is routed toward the ground.

i dont think your coolant tank is causing your over heating.Depending on mileage its more likely a thermostat or water pump.how many miles? an when was your last timing belt change?

I replaced the thermostat, tbelt, and water pump.
Looks like I have a blown head gasket.
Aside from a 12v 2.8i was thinking of a 1.8 t. I can do the work.
Only took about 3 3 1/2 hrs to do the work on the car.
Can someone point me to a thread, I have searched but found a lot of conflicting stuff.
Maybe a vr6?
Thanks

Head gasket is very rare on that car, do a leakdown test before you start.
Obviously the car is old but the 12 valve V6 is pretty robust.
Its very easy to get an air lock in the cooling system and heater core so you get bad circulation. Make sure you bleed it correctly.
None of the swaps you are contemplating would be cheap or quick. If you do the 1.8T use one from a car with the same type of transmission as the crankshafts are different auto/ manual.

dont forget the bleeder pee hole as i call it at the heater core hoses right one i think pull it out far enough till you see a small hole under the hose on the pipe bleed it there also undo your coolant tank bolts an put it as the highest point on your engine that'll help bleed it also good luck

Thanks. At this point I don't believe it is a blown gasket. Changed the oil and flushed the engine. There was no water or coolant.
At this point I believe the white smoke out of the tail pipe, which wasn't much was do to the tbelt, water pump, thermostat change.
Getting a new radiator tomorrow and I am hoping for some good news.
How do you know if the oil pump had failed. Can't do a pressure test.
Took the cap off and let the engine run and I didn't see any oil splashing around. Is that normal?
Thanks

oh an some hindsight thoughts check your oil in morning cold see if it looks like a coffee milk shake to see if coolants getting in oil. next check each plug an see if 1 or 2 are noticeably different to see if your burning coolant last but not least condition of your fan clutch? just some thoughts.
