Tire upgrade
First time poster here,
currently have 235/45R17 on my a4 b6
according to my research the rims are 7.5Jx17 ET38 if im correct.
Friend of mine has a set of 245/40R17 he wants to sell me for cheap.
Would this fit on the rim or would they give me any problems with rubbing?
Thanks in advance

You can go to www.tiresize.com and get the specs for the two tire sizes. Essentially, your speedometer and odometer will overstate your speed and miles traveled by 2.4%. The tire width is 3/10" more, which should fit.
But, you should check on how old the tires are by looking at the date codes. More than 7 years means they're getting towards the end of their life. Also, the tread on all 4 has to be the same, because the awd is sensitive to that. I think, but am not sure, that Audi says the 4 tires can only vary by 2/32 tread depth across all.
Personally, I would stick with the stock specs, but economics rule sometimes, I understand. Just watch the tread wear, you can mess up the awd if it varies too much.

However, looking at Tyre Size Calculator/Tire Plus Sizing Calculator - Tyre Dimensions for Plus Sizing, I note that the widest tire advised for a 17x7.5 rim is a 235. Based on that, your friend's tire is too wide.
