I dont think there was a blockage. it was very cold out the oil was thick and didn't pickup and lube the cam shaft before it galled the cam and seized.I may have added the wrong oil and it did something. I am thinking I always synthetic but it burns oil so every 2,000 miles I add a quart I might have grabbed 15-40 diesel oil from my trucks. I don't think it mixed well.

Had it towed to an Audi Dealer near me who ran the diagnostic and couldn't figure out the issue and now wants to open up the engine to look at the cam sprockets for a $2,100 charge, and then repairs on top of that.
I didn't get any lights. It made noise till it locked up the intake cam and stalled.
I am no Audi mechanic this was the first time I ever touched a Audi or VW but it took me 4 hrs to take it apart and 6 hrs to put the 2 cams, timing chain retime both cams and retime the timing belt. I wanted to replace the belt but I didn't know if it was going to survive the surgery. I was right there I should have replaced the two timing chain idlers, belt, and water pump its like another 300.00. you have to pull off the whole bumper cover and radiator support and tilt it to get room it Sucks. If its still running I will spend a day and do the belt and other parts when it warms up this summer.

Thanks for all your posts informative posts, folks. I just heard back from dealer (not sure what took them so long) for approx 7K to change cylinder head and another $980 for tear down. So, I'm definitely not going dealer route.

Have found an independent shop with plenty of good reviews about 60 miles away, so I'm planning to get my car towed to his shop this weekend, and lets hope it is indeed the cam shaft tensioners. Will update here once I know more.

John McNeily: If you are still around. Do you take a lot of short trips with your A4?

I am still around. my trips where about 30 miles a day. and would do a 300 mile trip every couple weeks . But it will a wile before I go 300 miles from home. Still might trade it in.its running fine and the morning temps are around 20 deg . The car runs great. I will change the oil next week. we have about 500 miles on the car now.

I was wondering if moisture due to short trips might've caused ice blockage on the pickup. Looks not to be the case with your long trips though.
