Default Buying high mileage 2012 A4

I am looking at a 2012 A4 Manual Trans with 160k at a good price. What problems should I expect or look for? How many miles can the 2.0 L engine go? How many miles on the timing chain?

I don't know how long the engine can typically go without major problems but you will want to keep an eye out for carbon buildup. If the timing chain tensioner has never been replaced then you should take care of that as soon as possible.

Thank you Delta Rover. I purchased the car from a dealer therefore I am unable to talk to previous owner(s) about the type of service that was done. The Carfax only covers some of the service. Is there any way that I can check or have the tensioner checked? How do I watch for carbon buildup? Appreciate the learning opportunities that you all offer.

There is a way to fairly easily determine the part number of the tensioner. I saw it on a youtube video by the Humble Mechanic. (The part has been updated a few times to improve it). Also you can go to any Audi dealer and have them lookup service records for work done at any Audi dealership.

For actually checking the carbon buildup you have to remove the intake manifold. Check out Audizine B8 DIY stickies for what the valves look like with carbon buildup. But what I really meant was be aware of the issue and try to take preventative measures (have the valves cleaned) before it starts impacting performance or causing emissions/CEL problems.
