They replaced the pistons and rings as part of a fix for the oil consumption problem.

Unless the coils were not installed correctly this could have been done by the dealer. If it were they would have failed when you drove away. These engines also have a reputation of coils failing so it might just be a reliability issue. If you replace 1 my bet is the other 3 will fail in a short time.

Thanks for replies, if I have to pay to have a coil changed how much do you think it would cost?

The symptons where miss firing on the car and my mechanic said the fault code is P0404. He says it is the 4th cylinder according to his computer diagnosis.

Price of a coil runs from $35 to $60 each depending on the brand. Replacing it takes maybe 15-30 minutes. Here's how it's done

Hmmmm.... my mechanic said to replace one could be $500, maybe less. He's not an Audi dealer either so maybe charging me too much?

Correction, he just told me $300 to $350 to replace coil and 4 spark plugs.

That sounds like he is replacing 4 coils and 4 spark plugs. Lets say 4 coils at $40 each = $160 plus 4 spark plugs at $10 ea = $40. You have maybe $200 in parts and the job should take less then an hour so if his rate is $100 an hour then you have the $300 bill. This is a pretty simple job but if you don't have the skill you need pay the bill.

He told me it's $70 for the coil and he's only replacing one. But he is replacing 4 spark plugs.
Sounds like I need a second estimate to check his number
Thanks
Mike

People who want to directly address their consumption past the rings could try 2-cycle oil in the gas at 500:1. TCW-3 spec for 2C oil means it's ashless, and will serve as a "top cylinder" lube. I use it continually in my engines, none of which burn a drop...two Audi 3.2 and a Ford 4.0.

Use extra the first time to coat the fuel system parts. It resists corrosion from ethanol, and contains the same additives in fuel, as well as stabilizers and the base oil itself. I buy the Supertech from WalMart by the gallon, it costs about $.25c for 3oz to treat 10 gallons. Money very well spent.
