I always had a little computer in the car for road trips to keep the kids busy. Running Plex Media Server for two iPad mounted on the front seats was always the basis. The kids won't ride with us on road trips that often anymore but I still wanted to get this working, especially with WiFi and AudiConnect being pretty mature these days.

This is what the left side behind the lid looks in the trunk:

A perfect litt spot for a NUC, just missing the right case.. Well after some trial an error I got a nice case "printed" that fits that spot perfectly":

KL30 is right there, KL15 and GND I got from the socket on the other side of the trunk. The NUC connects to the WiFi network in the Audi and so do the iPad in the rear. Now the kids can enjoy movies from Plex and also access the Internet for some other things like Netflix. And with the t-mobile SIM working, data consumption won't be the biggest issue anymore. In a perfect world Audi would release an RSE app for iOS so that the iPad could access the map on the MMI (are we there yet?), maybe one day...

What OS are you running on the NUC? Any concerns just killing the power when you turn the car off rather than a proper shut down?

Awesome work by the way.

I'm running Windows 7 Pro with some EWF components added from Windows 7 Embedded (Google will tell you how). EFW makes the drive "read only" which means after each hard power off it goes back to where it was before. The PSU used for delayed shutdown also has a wire to "press the power switch" but the NUC has no header for the power switch, that's why I didn't use it, EWF is easier.

5 antennas going to the telematics unit, interesting. Wonder why they need 5.

Do you notice any problems with heat?

Nope. not yet, even though the little NUC is running at 100% CPU most of the time since it has to do the transcoding for the iPad.
