Default 2.0 L engine-oil consumption

Has the problem been fixed? If so, what year car is safe to buy, or is that marked by VIN? I'm considering a new(er) A6. I don't have a problem with 4 cyl unless the engine IS a problem.

I have a 2013 A6 2.0 Premium Plus that just hit 22,000 miles. I check the oil via the silly MMI function and it has always been OK. I have not had to add any oil. I did have the 5,000 and 15,000 mile services done, both of which involve an oil and filter change. So far, no problems.

I think you should read up on low tension piston rings, I don't think there is such a thing as "fixed". There is actually a great phd thesis out of MIT that kicked all of this off if you are interested in the mechanicals behind it. This is pretty much what every mfg is moving to because of cafe requirements. Secondly, because the rings dont keep the oil out as well, they pulled the moly out of the oil to keep from fouling up the catalytic converter. Lots of mfgs are also fitting a larger sump to account for this during whatever change interval they recommend.

Influencing your particular engine is when they honed your cylinders and if it was early in the tooling lifecycle you are more likely to consume oil because the grooves are ever so slightly deeper than later tooled cylinders.

Anyways, the new normal is consumption of oil because of the ring packs they use nowadays. My experience says most engines with these ring packs stay tight until about 60K miles and then the consumption slowly kicks up a bit. I wouldn't be scared about the oil level moving, especially over a 10K change interval. What I've seen is that you get to whatever the engine wants to consume and then it levels out there with the peak being reached around 60K-80K.

A healthy engine burns some oil, but, not too much. That's about all that can be said about that. Now if the fuel savings are greater than the the fact you need to add oil...I don't know.

Hope it helps.

Don't worry about oil consumption. None of my ten Audis has used oil. I use synthetic oil, usually Mobil 1, and after warranty I travel up to 20,000 miles between oil and filter changes. I never add oil between changes. So far my 2013 2.0T Premium Plus is soon due for the second oil change and I haven't added oil.
No worries

Mike, lots of theories out there, but I don't believe we'll know for a while if the 4 cylinder stops consuming oil after year 2013 or whatever date it may be.

My '11 4 cyl consumes some oil but had Stage 1 fix done. Our 2015 4 cyl Q5 consumes some negligible amount of oil.

I have a 2012 2.0T with 30k miles. 5k, 15k and 25k oil changes done and the oil level never changed in between.

In 2018, I bought a 2014 A6. Had the 64K mile check done. They said you're good to go. 6 months late I took it in for oil consumption. Covid19, missed a bit of miles, now, its going thru 3/4 of a quart in less than 600 miles. Dealership says The MFG told them to basically rebuild the engine. Seven thousand dollars!! And they're saying its gonna be on me!!

Actually, 5 years later I still own this car with 91k miles on it now and it still doesn't burn any oil even with 10k mile oil change intervals. It believe it has a lot to do with how the car is driven, and I drive mostly highway miles.
