Black sut around tail pipes
Hello Everyone
This is my first post. I bought my wife a 2012 A6 2.0T Premium Plus back in 2012. We have used the highest octane gas available, minimum 91. But it gets a black sut build up on the tail pipes. I asked the service technician and she asked what octane gas were we using. When I told her she didn't know what could be casuing the build up. Is this normal? Love this car so much I now an picking up a 2015 A6 Prestige this Saturday for myself!
Thank you for any replies.

Normal. You can clean, polish and apply a protectant to prevent long-term issues. Hit up Detailers Domain for products.
The soot is a by-product of using gasoline, turbo and direct-injection.

Small amounts of Soot is normal. If a large amount accumulates it indicates the engine is running rich and this would show up as decreased MPG. If MPG is normal then its no problem and nothing to be concerned about.

In years past, soot was an indication of an engine running rich. But for some reason, the newer, unleaded fuels seem to produce more.
I recently tried switching from leaded premium to unleaded premium in a small engine. Had amazing amounts of visible soot coming from the exhaust. Was surprising. Talked to others who had done the same, it wasn't just a case of needing to adjust the timing better. They claimed more soot from their engines as well.
Seems to have been made worse with direct injection.
