How many of you have the cold start 2 second chain clatter noise? Sound like a bicycle chain clatter...

I got a 2012 A6 with a 3.0T supercharged. Had the same issue on the 2011 C6 A6 3.0T as well.... Dealer says it's normal... I don't believe a bit. Driving me insane and I hate to say this but a cheap Honda engine sounds heck of a lot better starting up.

Also embarrassing starting the motor in public where heads turn over a nice and shiny expensive Audi clattering away...

Have the service manager start up one of their A6 3.0Ts with you and see if he then says it's normal.

There is a TSB #2039995/1. Apparently no damage is done from the rattle, but there is a quieter timing chain tensioner available.

What type of oil are you using? Although I've had it since I bought the car, I switched from Castrol to Mobile and it's less noticeable.

Go to the C6 forum and you'll see how common it is along with timing chain issues (broken guides, skipping teeth...).

I've been using Castrol from dealer but last oil change i used Motul 8100 X-Cess 5w40 and it seems to be worse.... thinking of switching it to Mobil soon.

if this doesn't stop - i'll probably get rid of it; dealer won't do sh*t and keeps claiming its normal. I've had 2 Audi dealers in Boston area state the same. Not willing to pay ton of money to get their design flaw fixed. Also not willing to find the chain or guide breaking one fine day.

Offhand, I'd say your tensioner is probably bad, or improperly installed. It's a fairly big job, as they probably have to pull the engine from the car to do any work inside there. I'm not an Audi mechanic, but I am an engineer. That shouldn't be happening.

Why don't you call Audi USA and open a case with them? The matter will be addressed properly that way and if still under warranty they would fix it.

And I can say with confidence that Honda engines are quieter than almost all German brands.

I would vote that it's pretty common Audi trait. Nothing to be too worried about IMHO.
