Are you interested in watching video while the Audi is moving?

I don't think you can play video from SD card. SD card is for music only.
I have tried multiple setups that I were able to play videos, but I just did it for fun, it's not practical at all.
First of all, you will need to enable VIM (video in motion) via a VAG-COM cable.
Otherwise, you won't be able to see the video when moving.
For playing video, I think there are multiple ways.
a. Play from your ipod touch/iphone with a red head AMI cable for iOS devices (it's a old 30pins cable)
b. Get an RCA AMI cable.
With this, you can play whatever you want.
(something like this, just for showing picture purpose.

The setups I have tried including...
Roku XS -> RCA AMI cable -> screen
iPhone -> lightening to HDMI adapter -> HDMI to RCA converter -> RCA AMI cable -> screen
old iPod touch -> 30pin AMI cable -> screen (I never played video in this way, but I am quite sure you can)
In conclusion, yes you can play video or even cast your phone screen to your car but it's really not worth it.
The screen resolution in our car is just bad. You will run into weird ratio.

I have no idea which A6 the OP owns or where he lives but with the C7 in North America (and likely also in ROW), so long as the videos are formatted and sized per the manual's file specs, you can definitely load and play videos from an SD card. I've got a few music videos on my SD card as I write this and they play just fine. The OP did mention he/she was not interested in playing them while the car is moving which of course, would not require VIM to be enabled.

Yes i have a C7 and im from the UK.
Thanks for your responses, im glad to know its possible at least.
If i get the red head wire for the ami, is it just a simple case of going on youtube on my iphone and watchinng the video on the mmi screen?
Regarding the SD i have tried .mpeg videos and mp4 videos however i get just the sound and no picture.
My mmi software version is rmc_eu_p11096
