And it did make a big improvement in the quality of the sound system from the earlier version I had. From what I've gathered, new cars currently have the 733 version installed. Not sure what the difference is.

For what it's worth, I found and purchased this MMI update disc from ECS for my 2012 A6 prestige: Search SiteSearch 8r0906961cl - 8R0906961CL - CDROM - ES#2684120

Delivered, it was $16.

It is for version 715, which I know isn't the newest (especially 8 out last week). I'm planning to install it myself. I have a charger to hook up to the battery during installation like everybody has mentioned.

I only have one question about an MMI update: does anyone know, or can you provide a link to, if MMI needs an activation code similar to the nav updates?

Thanks!

This would be a first - I have never heard of anyone upgrading C7 MMI software on their own. Good luck - let us know how it comes out.

I would be very careful
Here is some instructions
But I have heard horror stories about upgrading/updating MMI software by the dealer and somehow messing with it and some ECUs needed to be replaced (obviously because the dealer did they covered it)

I had my car into the dealer for the recall fix and TCU update and finally got them to do an MMI update to fix the problems I have been complaining about. During the MMI update something happened that has resulted in having to replace the MMI unit (F5), I think that is the designation they used.

I wonder if these horror stories really stem from techs letting the vehicle die while performing the update...

Hi again,

I attempted the upgrade yesterday afternoon. I am video recording all of my attempts in case I need to review any steps I took and also so I can post it later if it all works out.

After inserting the disc and and selecting software update, it begins scanning the disc. For a very short half-second, the screen shows an option to start the upgrade/update that quickly disappears. Another message then displays saying "No Update Device Found".

I'm still researching to find out if I need to do something differently. I did find a post describing that I need to use the Engineering Update menu, which can be accessed by pressing CAR and BACK at the same time. I am unable to get this menu to load. The green menu loads just fine. If anybody has any info on which page I need to be on to access the Engineering Update menu, I would appreciate it if you would pass it along. The green menu only loads after pressing CAR, the MENU, then CAR and MENU.

Thanks!

Not sure how helpful this is. Here's a thread from a 2012 A7 ROW owner that upgraded his MMI software. https://www.audiworld.com/forums/a7-...770-a-2864827/
I'm also thinking what you are calling the engineering update menu is the hidden menu that needs to be enabled with a VAG-COM.
