Default Newbie with ? on new A6 purchase

we completed negotiation for a fairly loaded A6 and went to dealer to complete purchase. all papers were signed but, car wouldn't start and they offered to drive it to us after it was fixed and detailed. this was wed. yesterday, i got a call from them telling me that they initially thought it was the battery(car was in a storage area that lost heat and we had -13 temps earlier this week) but now have said battery is fine and there was a faulty starter which they are fixing. they said that all the electrical components were checked and are in working order.They are offering to drive it to us tues. they assure me that they are delivering a properly working new car... we are not quite sure what to do.how would we know this is not a lemon? hard to believe that it will take them 6 days to diagnose and fix this issue along with complete detail. beginning to wonder whether Audi is a reliable brand. no $$ have changed hands. they have offered us various minor perks like an extra detail,weekend in area hotel, audi jackets,etc. they have refused to give us audicare though. any thoughts appreciated!!

i would cancel the order and get a different car, will make you sleep better at night

Do not accept that car at all. It won't matter what they offer you to take it. Just walk away. It's not your car until it gets delivered. Simply walk away and use another dealer. Do not drive it off the lot. New cars come off the assembly line ever 2-3 minutes. Don't ever feel rushed to close the deal.

One defective part out of the thousands in the car does not necessarily make a lemon. Even a new, ordered car can have an issue or two. If you are happy with your choice and satisfied with the price, I wouldn't be too concerned over a replaced starter. If not, then pass and find another one but realize any new car can have a problem or two after delivery. That's what a warranty is for.

I would cancel it - not a good sign. You will always be wondering in the back of your mind.

Tell them find you a different A6 or find a different dealer

Agree with the rest who said to cancel. Not the right way to start off, and once you take delivery it's yours. Tell them to find you a new car or find yourself another dealer.

I have to agree with most of the folks here. I would not accept anything less than perfect on a new car. Cancel it.

Well said. New cars unfortunately have problems. That one developed one before you even took it but it could have just as easily been one week after you got it. It is exactly the point of warranties.

But you don't have to take that car but just know you may not get the same deal else where. If you are fine with that then do what you feel most comfortable with.

I agree. However, I might be more inclined to take it for an extended test drive to make sure I feel comfortable with it before accepting it...mostly just to make me feel better.

Sine the car is equipped with auto stop/start, and because the issue is with the starter, I would avoid that car at all costs and pick one from a different dealer. Warranty or not, fixed or not, it would be enough to spook me from that specific car. Buy the car, not the deal.

Wow, I didn't expect so many people to steer away from the car. It could be something simple/stupid that can be fixed and the car would be fine for the rest of its life. Of course its the OP's choice at the end of the day.

If you have time to wait, build a car that you like and wait for it to come in. If the incentives are very good, grab this one. It has warranty after all.

thanks everyone for your responses. we are certainly treading carefully here. the deal is a good deal BUT... does anyone feel that the 6 days they want to diagnose,fix and prep car seem a bit much here??

When dealing with the complexity of today's technologically advanced automobiles and their myriad of systems and parts, expectations of perfection is an elusive dream. There is no guarantee nor can there be an unreasonable expectation of perfection now or in the future with ownership, only the reality that something can and likely will go wrong at some point in time. Things will break. Things will be fixed.

Doesn't seem long at all. Especially when 2 of those days are the weekend. Maybe they need to get the parts from Germany? A week seems about normal for a German car repair. Thats about how long all my BMW services lasted too.

Default Starter = Stranded

The starter on my 2006 A6 Wagon failed right after one of the car's services. It had been working intermittently but never did not work after several tries with me ending up pushing the brake pedal almost through the firewall. I noted this when I brought it in for the 25k service but they could not duplicate so no problem. They drove the car up for me to take it away. Fortunately they shut it down and nobody could get it restarted. Diagnosis; failed starter. I was given a loaner and they fixed it within 3 days. I consider myself very lucky since it might have failed anywhere and I think a tow back to a dealership would have been required.

My A6 is 3 months old and has been at the dealer for a few electrical issues. It's a little bit concerning to me but since I love already had it a few months I'm at the mercy of the dealer.

Thanks everyone for your input. I understand those that say not to worry that there is a warranty. However, after thinking this through over the weekend we are not comfortable taking this car. Something just doesn't sit right with us and I think paying 66K for a car we shouldn't have lingering doubt. So we have decided to walk from this deal and will be considering ordering an A6.

yes, that seems far too long based on my experience with other European vehicles.

Smart decision. I once had a Merkur that had a bunch of electronic gremlins, ended up being a real PITA. When you are buying something that costs 66K - why accept something that was broke to begin with.
