Default Paddle shifters

Does anyone here user their steering wheel paddle shifters?
Why?
Under what circumstances?
How do YOU use them?
Do you prefer to use the shifter like a manual?
or just let the automatic take control?

I don't drive my Quattro 3.0 alot (this car is mostly used by my wife) but when I do I like to open it up and get the cobwebs out.

I used the paddles and the shifter but, I just don't get a kick ot of using them like I do with a manual transmission. Might as well just let the automatic do its thing.

Thoughts?

I use it all the time to slow down the car. I also use it to upshift from 6 to 7 because I always travel around 40mph (back road). Rarely go 45mph where 6 to 7 occurs.

I rarely use them because kick-down is way faster in auto and it will change from 8 to 3 faster than the paddles will ever do.

I also have the Chipwerke and its crude approach does not modify the transmission so I may use the paddles from a standstill to get the best acceleration times. Need the Lap Timer mod for change up times too.

I used to use paddles more when I had 5 gears and a tug on the paddle made a difference but one pull with 8 gears is a much smaller ratio of change. Besides, this 8 speed box is very responsive, smooth and adapts very well to input. This box could put the paddles out of business!

Thanks,

Hi Mark,

I recently installed a paddle enabled steering wheel in my C6 and it was actually quite easy. As for programming it, here you go:

https://www.audiworld.com/forums/a6-.../#post24656916

VAG-COM Programming

1) Connect VAG cable to car and open controller 16 - Steering Wheel.

2) Select Recode - 07

3) Write down original softcoding. For my car, it was 02042

4) To enable the paddle shift buttons, change the 3 digit from right from a "0" to a "1"
(i.e. 02042 --> 02142) and click on "Do It". The latest version of the VAG-COM includes a
label file that deciphers the coding on this controller.

5) Close controller. And go test the car.

oh BTW, I use my often when merging and entering the hwy and such. In normal driving, not so much. But they are fun and always great to hear the V8 open up above 4K revs

I also like to leave it in M3 on my commute which keeps me from speeding.

Are you saving the other 7 gears for a special occasion?
