Potential 2012 A6 Owner - Question about overheating
#11
From the service history, I'm assuming that the car you're looking at has 3.0T. If that's the case, I would consider the WP and Thermostat replacement as a positive sign. I have 2009 with 3.0T. MY WP is the new version (older one with plastic housing had a tendency to crack and fail) but my thermostat went out at 65K miles. I got lucky because it happened just when I got back from driving to Vegas. I can't imagine the headache I would have had to endured if it happened in the middle of the desert.
But if it is a 3.0T, one thing I would worry about is the hydraulic timing chain tensioner. Mine is starting to make noise (sometimes, not always) during a cold start up. It's just a matter of time before it fails and I will need a repair costing up to $7K. Many V6 and V8 owners have suffered this problem and that is the reason why I'm getting rid of my car at 68K miles.
For whatever it's worth, I would stay away from these engines with more than 50K miles. The risk of hydraulic tensioner failure is too great in my opinion. Another reason why I decided to lease a new 3.0TDI instead of buying. I love Audis but I've decided not to own beyond the warranty period.

I bought my 2012 A6 premium plus with 68K miles 3 months ago and the car was a business company car. It is not CPO either.
I've looked on carfax and it did not go in for the required maintenance. About 2 days ago I took it to a shop that is very popular working on German cars and also did 75K mile maintenance, APR Stage 1 & 2, intake and new tires. After they were done car drove like its new. I'm at 70K miles.
Before you buy it have them fix everything and do the required maintenance on it. Or I guess find a CPO

This is my second audi i owned a dealer demo A8 and put 160,000 on it with no major problems just kept it serviced at the audi dealership for everything including oil changes. Audi is the only car i have serviced at the dealership and keep every receipt. I have a 2012 i purchased new with every option cold weather and the technology package that included side assist, led headlamps, and whatever else. I occasionally get stupid little problems but i would'nt sweat any major problems. Yes brake jobs and the such are not cheap but if i took pictures of the interior and exterior the car looks brand new with almost 80K miles. Also i run this car with a stage 2 apr tune with pulley and it still pulls 12.3 and just this week averaged 28.7 pitt to nyc and back while cruising almost 80 plus the entire turnpike.
Am i sold on Audi? You better believe
