A while back when my father retired he treated himself to a BMW. Driving in the UK he came across a large flooded area... he drove through it and completely ruined the engine. BMW or Audi, who cares when water goes in the wrong places. His car never really got fixed and the ultimately he needed to dump the car. I can't imagine this Audi driver from the video won't have problems following this (foolhardy?) move. I'd love to know what happened later.

Rule "here"? Where? Doing dumb things with passenger cars?

Don't wet yourself. This is a simple issue of the air intake placement. Some off-road vehicles use "snorkles" to have the intake fed from a pipe higher than the passenger compartment to deal with traversing water. Simply deciding where it goes doesn't make it "good" or "bad", if it's consistent with the purpose of the vehicle. Also, you don't know that the water didn't recede a bit since the first cars got stuck, so no reason for complements to anyone here, neither those drivers nor the manufacturers, who do not design an air intake to survive deep water conditions for any passenger cars.

For those still not convinced that you can do some serious damage and 'hydrolock' your engine if water gets sucked in, here are some threads right here on this Audi forum.

To add to the hydrolock issues....
Water, unlike air, is not compressible. When it is draw into the cylinder of an engine and the piston starts up on the compression stroke some very bad things happen. As the water forces the valves to close even tighter some other mechanical part needs to give. Depending on the strength of the components, it is usually the connecting rod that bends. I have seem pistons crack and even the odd crankshaft break. Some of these broken components have been known to exit through the engine block. As you can imagine this leads to a catastrophic engine failure. This amount of damage can result in a total loss of the car as the entire engine (at a minimum) now needs to be replaced.

I have experience with a flooded A6 and my car stalled while driving at a very slow speed in water that was below the door sills when it stopped (see post referenced above - Just flooded my A6...)

That driver was dumb (and possibly lucky) - my car was totaled, especially once the water rose and floated it to the side of the road after I left it.

The Audi driver was at least as dumb as the BMW driver. If the BMW driver was not able to see how deep the water was he was taking perhaps an unknown chance driving through water. The Audi driver should have seen the obvious depth of the water, given the stalled vehicles sitting in the water. Dumb and lucky.
