Starting the heater, am I doing it wrong?

Without revealing how I know this, here's a story you will enjoy. The BMW A/C continued to be ineffective beyond the Bavaria (I had a 1971 2500, essentially a base model, stripped Bavaria), even after the launch of the 5 Series. BMW folks in the U.S. finally insisted that engineers come from Germany to see the problem in person. They acquired a black on black 5 Series and had the team land in Texas, in the summer. They left for a road trip, and without the visiting engineers knowing it, the inside door locks/handles and windows had been deactivated. They roasted.
Soon thereafter, a deal was struck with Delco (division of GM) to supply AC components, and if you find a roughly 1977 vintage 5 Series, you will see the first rotary Delco compressors replacing the prior piston design, with the Delco label clearly showing right on top! Not quite "Bavarian"!!

Fantastic story! I remember the last American car my Dad had prior to the Bavaria -- 1970 Pontiac Catalina. American A/C was the best in those days. Thanks for sharing. We'll have to chat offline about our E3 experiences. My Dad's a great guy - he never denied me access to the Bavaria (my other friends were restricted to the lesser cars in their parents fleets) and he never held me responsible for all those E3 issues!
