Default Updating MMI and maps by yourself?

Hi fellas, so I've heard that when you update the MMI and/or the maps, you need to "activate" the update somehow or else it won't work.

Now, I've seen "update kits" like these below. They cost much less than Audi takes to update the mmi/nav. Is this really all that is needed to update the mmi and maps? One of the SD cards seem to be the "activation".

Has anyone tried this? Did it work, how long did it take etc?

If you decide to try it please let us know how it goes and what versions you started and ended with.

If they are genuine Audi, they are only cheaper because you are not paying the labour they charge whilst they sit there waiting for the update to happen.

In the U.S., for pre-MY2016, it's not possible to update the maps without the dealer doing the install (in ROW, it may be possible for a DIY). Note that U.S. MY2016 has the new MMI Nav system with LTE that theoretically will allow for future update downloads by the owner.

The need to go to the dealer with the navigation update is to get the activation key which is not (legally) available if you download the update from the web, it would seem that the pack shown has the activation key included but I suspect if you pitch up at a dealer and try and order that part number you will be politely advised it is only available to dealers and not the public. Other issue of course with updating MMI software yourself is that if it goes wrong you will be looking at very expensive bill to get it put right, it will definitely not be covered by warranty
