Default Windshield Replacement

Hi Guys,

So I had a road trip this past weekend that ended up with this stone chip. A stone the size of a golf ball flew out from under a truck at about 80mph.

My question is this: Does the 2012 model have the same windshield as 2014? Someone told me that part numbers are different (from Audi). I would like to replace it with aftermarket because Audi wants $575 for the windshield and $85 for Rain Sensor Film (not really sure where the sensor goes on). However there is almost no aftermarket windshields for 2013-2014 because they are so new. So I maybe I can swap in a 2012 model year

So far in 4 months of ownership I have 3 stone chips (2 in one trip this past weekend). This has me wondering if the OEM windshield is weak or weaker than aftermarket. Anyone have experience with replacing the OEM windshield? If so, what vendor did you guys use and what is your experience with them.

Thanks in advance.

Do you have HUD and the radar stuff behind the mirror? I know with it you absolutely NEED to get an OEM windshield.

You should check with your insurance as this would be under comprehensive. Depending on your deductible, with labor, you might be better off replacing it with factory Genuine through your insurance carrier. Usually, rates are not affected by claims such as this.

No HUD, no radar.
LED lights and rain sensor only

Deductible not worth the claim.

Did this same thing, no out of pocket cost for windshield. AZ has some pretty tough laws against damaged windshield/replacement, so I would double check if you go this route.

EDIT: Did not read OP's post below mine. Still, for others.

There is no radar stuff behind the mirror only a camera, not sure what pkg requires the camera but if you have ACC than you have the camera, and of course the rain sensor.

Check your policy. There's often glass coverage with no deductible. I have it on my policy but there's some minimum size damage requirements.

Gents, I will check my policy, that is not the question here. Back to OP, has anyone had experience with other vendors for windshield, and does anyone know if the windshield from a 2012 model will fit.

Thanks

Can't see why it wouldn't. Again, if you're policy has no-deductible glass coverage, they should cover an OEM windshield, especially if there are no alternatives listed for your model year. If so, no need to look for an after-market one.

Remember also, this deductible to replace your windshield is related to the Comprehensive coverage of your policy, not to the collision coverage--they are totally separate.

Just for fun, I will tell you to check your policy too

To your question - aftermarket windshields do exist for the A6. I had to get mine replaced due to a stone causing a crack.

My insurance company was going to have them use an aftermarket windshield but I argued for and received an OEM one, which they agreed to given the age of the vehicle. So while I do not have first hand experience with an aftermarket windshield for the A6, they do exist

After my recent experience getting the windshield on my 2012 A6 replaced (three times), I can definitely recommend that you not use Safelite.

I second this! I'm currently going through the exact same thing. I'm on my 3rd try at replacement from Safelite for a 2012 A6. I am getting OEM glass but the first time they put in the version without the HUD thickness and the 2nd time they messed up the install. 3rd try tomorrow and I'm hoping that's the last time I have to deal with them. Insurance is covering everything but it's still a hassle!

So HUD windshields are thicker?

I think so, I found this on the forums. the HUD definitely does not work right with the standard windshield. It's distorted, doubled, and dim.

They are different (thicker where the HUD reflects, IIRC) in order to prevent a ghost image. If you have the HUD, you're stuck with OEM - no way around it.

Thanks for the clarification on the HUD windshield. Get this: Audi dealership has 11 different part numbers for windshields for 2014 audi A6.

Aftermarket is 1/2 the price though, so I'm going to go with that. ... I think.

If you go aftermarket, PPG and Pilkington are typically higher end names that make good aftermarket glass

Safelite makes their own glass and I would stay away from them

Price be damned, I'd stick with OEM glass. Thats all thats between you and anything thats flying down the road at lethal speeds. I'd want the best I could get my hands on.

Honestly $585 is a bargain, my M37S got 3 chips and insurance covered all but my $250 deductible under comprehensive, the windshield was over $900 because is was a sound deadening windshield. After that I lowered my comprehensive to $0 and it just paid off, got 2 scratches in the passenger door each about 3-4 inches long, insurance is covering the reprint, and my rental and the paint job is $1400 and $0 out of my pocket.
