'03 A6, PRND flashing.. TCM needs replacement.. advice needed!
My car: 2003 A6 3.0L CVT - 50,900 miles
I recently took my car in for a checkup due to the "PRND" lights flashing and Check Engine light on. Here is what was noted:
"Caused by Internal Malfunction of Transmission Control Module (P0706 fault code stored in TCM)
Scanned and recorded diagnostic fault code. Measured Transmission range sensor reading and found to be operating properly. checked fluid level - okay. recommend replacing transmission control module (tcm) than rechecking transmission shift operation."
Approx cost: $2200. (1 day's work + part)
Does this sound common? Should I buy the part myself and have them install it -- Audi confirmed that they will do it.. but I have no idea of the part number... Or should I just suck it up and pay the $2200... just thinking of my options after researching this problem online.. Thanks!
ALSO: how long is it okay to drive till I can come up with the scratch for that?!

I would check the passenger carpet floor to see if its wet. If it is then you fried your tcm. I would investigate online for a replacement or have yours repaired maybe.
Sounds like the codes were pulled by the stealer.

Thanks for the advice.. I went ahead and checked the carpet, but it does not seem to have been wet
BUT I received some papers in the mail regarding a lawsuit that is in progress stating that AUDI (VW Group of America) be held responsible for CVT failures on all 2001, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006 A4 and A6 equipped with a factory installed CVT transmission.
I checked it out (With Audi) and they confirmed that this is legitimate.. so if you have had your CVT replaced, you will be reimbursed.
I am going to take my car in again for a second opinion and if I do need to have it changed, at least I know it'll be taken cared of...
