Default 2001 A6 auto 'press clutch' message help please!

Hi guys. I have the car mentioned above. It came to me as a project, minus the ECU. The seller bought one and sent it to me but when plugged in under the hood the dash, on an automatic car, says 'press clutch to start', like our other 2.7 six speed does. The auto car cranks over but will not fire/start. Did the seller just buy a 'manual' ECU by mistake, or is something else going on?

Thanks, K9

Sounds like the immobilizer is keeping the car from being started.

The ECU has to be "introduced" to the instrument cluster by having it work through the E-Harmony at Audi HQ.

You should be able to find the part number for the original ECU by calling the dealership with the vin to compare what you have, some ECU's can also be soft coded with VCDS/Vagcom if I recall.

Sounds like the ECU or instrument cluster is coded for a manual trans car. I doubt either would cause a crank no fire. It is NOT immobilizer. That would start, run for a few seconds, and die, and have the flashing Key symbol on the dash.

Thanks guys. My local Audi specialist says he thinks this is a trans ECU issue, with it not communicating with the car. Either missing or corroded harness...

Watch this space. Car is at a shop so I don't know if the trans ECU is even there, what with it being Sunday and all.....
