Default CVT transmission

Hi all, i have a 2004 A6 avant 2.5 TDI with the CVT transmission which is a lovely car, just had the timing belts changed along with new water pump and thermostat, upon looking at service book the car last had it's transmission oil changed at 127,522 miles. She has recently turned 158k miles..

I have read about others carrying out this work on theirs but have not heard them mention about changing the filter/ strainer, i've also noticed that this is en-cased inside the gearbox unlike the tiptronic where there is a sump you can undo once the oil has been drained out !.

What i want to know is why have Audi done that ? Is there a specific reason why they've decided to en-case the filter ?, is not required to be changed at the same time you renew the oil too ? I have worked on cars for a decade and usually replace the filter the same time as the oil and i'm rather puzzled why they've decided to make a consumable item so inaccessible for when they have clearly thought out a more logical way on the tiptronic gearbox, anyone out there know ?

My wise father taught me a long time ago, "When you don't know why a car maker did something, the answer generally has to do with money."
