Default Transmission Pan

Got a 2001 a6 2.8. Is the transmission pan made of aluminum? Went over a hard bump put a really small hole in it. People are telling me to use jb weld but I think I'm just going to get it professionally welded together, which is why I need to know if it's aluminum or not. Not going to replace it I contacted the dealer and the pan by itself is $400.... Not expecting that at all. I was told this is the safest way to go besides replacing the pan and if it's just a regular steel pan, this should be really cheap to fix (not sure as to why an aluminum pan is such a big deal).

Had a 1998 A6 2.8 and a 2001 A4 2.8, both had aluminum oil pan/cover. Both broke and were replaced for much less than $400 for the part. But we did use JBWeld for temporary repair to the A4. Held fine, making me wonder why I bothered to replace it.

Do not know about trans covers.

Okay thanks. By the way all of the fluid should have leaked out by now right? It happened yesterday night about 18 hours ago. Shouldn't it all just pour out or would I have to cypher through the gears (like the process when filling the transmission with fluid). There was a big puddle on the ground but I'm not sure if it was 9 quarts worth (correct me if I'm wrong I believe that's how many quarts it takes).

You sure it is the transmission pan?
I am fairly sure they are steel.

Engine oil pan is aluminum.

A magnet will help you decide for yourself.

Yes it's the transmission pan. Have any idea about my other question? Would all the fluid have drained out thought the crack?

Thanks I didn't even think about that. That would explain why the magnets are in there since aluminum isn't highly magnetic.

Probably not. If you have a small crack in the pan, it would take a long time to lose all the fluid.

Prepare to catch a couple of quarts of transmission fluid when removing the pan.

Check the bentley manual on the procedure to refill the transmission fluid to the proper level. I would suggest a new transmission filter while you're in there.

Were there aftermarket transmission pans?
My 2000 was steel, my 2002 parts car was steel.
All the ones I found while shopping for a replacement pan were steel.

What transmission is it?
