Assume nothing has been done, then and start by doing all of the 55k mx. including pulgs, air filter, fuel filter. You can do it yourself--there is a sticky.

Will do, I'm collecting parts now. It's a great write up. One additional thing I plan on replacing is the crank (speed) sensor. But I'm having a hard time finding it. Is there a diagram of the 3.2 available on the internet? I'm not saying its not there, but I have looked and I have found almost every other Audi motor ever made.

Although it has done only 72,000 m, these are possibilities:
1. Fuel pump may be dying- depends on previous life of car, e.g. pump having to work hard for a long time due to clogged fuel filter.
2. Faulty check valves in fuel line.
3. Intermittent fault in electrical relay ($30 part) for the fuel pump. Possibly poor contacts due to corrosion. Try replacing the 20Amp fuse (passenger side of dash, Brown holder #1). It's not expensive, may be faulty even if it looks intact.
4. If car lived in cold climate, may be due to water accumulation in gas tank. Try adding isopropyl alcohol antifreeze to fuel tank if you can get it.
If engine just dies without any response in rpm on pressing the gas pedal - may be due to faulty sensors in engine eg. crankshaft position sensor, cam position sensor, etc. Unlikely though bec car is still relatively young. Hope it is something simple and cheap.

glad you got it sorted.
do you still have the old one? curious what it looks like/where it is, etc.
I noticed today while waxing after the engine had been run about 4 minutes and then sat for 5 minutes that i could hear some clicking (single click every 20-30 sec) just forward of the pass side rear wheel. never heard that before, but maybe was never listening for it either.
