Default 2005 Audi A6 c6 Transmission oil change.

Hi,
Recently I start noticing that gear shifting is not the same it used to be, also hear much more noise from transmission while driving. It sounds like running cold car in winter season. I have no clue where is trans dipstick for this car to check oil level and color/smell. Iím sure many of you already done your tranny oil flush. I have done twice on my 1999 4runner so I feel comfortable thinking about doing it on my 2005+ A6 3.2 Quattro.
Please guide me to any howto or pictures. I recently bough VAG-COM for my successful rear brake job so Iím partially equipped minus repair manual.
All help will be appreciated.
135k so far not sure if trany oil change was ever done before i bought at 82k.

There is no dipstick on these transmissions, as Audi considers it a 'lifetime' fluid, sealed unit.

That's pretty far from true, though. In my case, I was at 127k miles, and started having some issues with shifting and the transmission 'juddering' - was more of a 'feeling', which then progressively got worse.

As I've detailed in other posts, the dealer wasn't a whole lot of help (since the car is out of warranty), and I wasn't willing to pay the 800 bucks for them to ignore the Audi tech bulletin on the exact issue (they were playing dumb), and based on member 'Turkeybaster's research, and with the help of the Ross-Tech VCDS, I did a fluid change myself, using Ford Mercon SP fluid.

Within about 10 miles, all shifting issues and juddering were gone, and I had only changed out about 5 quarts of fluid. 7k miles later, all is still well, but I DO want to order up a filter and gasket, and do the job properly.

If $ is not too much of a concern or you aren't mechanically inclined, have your dealer check to see if any software for the transmission is needing an update, and have them do a filter and fluid change. It could be costly, anywhere from 500 to 800 USD. And they might opine that it doesn't need it, since it is 'sealed and lifetime fluid'.

Member Kevin Gary here has a link to the various tech updates at the bottom of his posts. They are a good read, and show what most 2005 owners have had or are likely to have to deal with.

I change my ATF every 40k. Check out the transmission TSBs in the library linked in my signature.

Mine's a 2007 and approaching 100k miles. I want to drop the pan and do a filter/gasket change with the ATF change.

The problem is that there are a few incompatible Audi ATF fluids, and the local dealer urged not to touch it because it's a lifetime fluid and they did not stock ATF for Audis.

How can one determine which fluid goes with which model and where to buy it?

Only 08 and later uses newer fluid. The color of the oil is different greatly so you will be able to tell the moment you drain your fluid. DO NOT BUY any 3rd party fluid. Regardless whatever people posted online, they are NOT the same.

best is visual check and also check sw version on the at with vcds

There is a transmission TSB in the TSB library linked in my signature with the fluid part number and the TCM software update.

Last week i took a oil sample from my A6 transmission and it is BROWN. My VAG says Revision: H01, that i have no clue.

Funny, I changed mine without Audi fluid and its working as good or better than ever. Mercon SP in mine too. No Vag-Com used either. Didn't change it the first time till 145,000 miles. Some of us just have to prove the world is not flat. Guess that's just the way I roll.

Going to get changed again at 150,000 miles with Mercon SP along with a filter, without a Vag-Com and run to 300,000 miles before another change. Gasp!

impressive mileage, did you ever change or service the timing chain tensioners?

No I haven't. Car has had the usual MMI updates, trunk latch update and I had to pay for the heater valve replacement due to hot air blowing outside vents and that is about it for problems. I changed my brake pads front and rear, again without vag-com. Change my own oil at 10,000 mile intervals with Mobil 1, and do all my own servicing of spark plugs, filters, trans. oil changes ect. I'm rather impressed with how this car is holding up. Still drives and is tight as new. Longest I have ever owned a vehicle and am still loving it, planning to run the wheels off this one!

It does rattle some at startup for about 2 tenths of a second, sometimes it rattles ver hard if it sits for longer periods, but never seems to be a problem. Engine oil samples show very, very little wear metals at 10,000 mile intervals. Good power and mileage and no oil usage.

Did you just drain and refill the ATF without warming up as per the way with the VAG?

No, I went thru all the steps warming it up running the engine and checked the level after the change.


Just to be sure I was getting proper level at the right temp, I checked it prior to draining original fluid out also so I knew that I was checking properly at about the right temp.

Proper temp is about 100 Deg. F. As I recall its 40-50 C. That's not very warm.
