A6 4.2 quattro uneven running/transmission issues
I just picked up a 2005 A6 auto
It runs great, but at slower speeds up to 50mph on a steady throttle the rev counter wavers about 200rpm the whole time which is not pleasant.
There is an occasional rumble from the rear diff on gear changes which might be unrelated or a prop shaft bearing.
At higher speeds it seems fine.
I will find a local man with VAG-Com to see if there any fault codes.
Just wondered if this is the precursor to terminal gearbox issues.
I have searched the forum for similar problems - I saw one person replaced the mass air flow sensor which improved things...
It would be great to hear of any similar problems, thanks.

Had similar issues at that mileage. It turned out to be the torque converter. Prior to replacing the torque converter I had changed the fluids in the tranny and differentials. I also had the throttle body cleaned before biting the bullet and replacing the torque converter.

Went for the gearbox fluid change first.
Turned out the box was about 3/4 full with normal atf so a through clean out and new fluid.
Although it's a little sticky when cold, the gearbox is transformed now.
I think I'll do the oil again in about 2000miles to properly flush the old stuff out.
Fingers crossed.
