The basics... care to share?
So anytime I get a different car, I end up doing a lot of research... become familiar with the forum practices, find popular parts distributors etc... having never owned a car this advanced, wondering if you could shed some light for me.
I am reading a lot about software updates for the MMI Maps, for ECU computer updates etc.
Are people going to the dealer for these updates? Are they uploaded some how? Are people uploading these "updates" via vcds? How often are updates released to the make or model?
Car in question is an '05 Audi A6 3.2

I just went through this on a recently purchased 2005. You don't need VCDS to do the MMI update, just the discs. Here is one place that has the software: https://a6retrofit.com/mmi-software-...1-5570-5-5-70/
IF you run into problems burning the ISO image, just unpack the ISO image and then burn that to a CD and it should work fine.
I think you have to go to the dealer for any EU updates. I have owned 3 A6s (2005, 2007 and 2005) and have not needed any ECU updates. But, they may have been done before I owned the cars. The only one I have really seen mentioned a lot is the transmission.
This site has a pretty comprehensive walkthrough on the actual procedure once you burn the discs. MMI 2G software update to version 5570 - mr-fix.info
If you already have the car or are thinking of purchasing an A6, I would highly recommend a VAGCOM cable from RossTech. Will save you a lot of headache when things fail. Will also come in very handy of you ever need to purchase an Audi or VW and want to scan it for problems.
For parts, I have used BMA, rockauto and amazon. I have mostly needed consumables (air filter, oil filter, brakes/rotors, cabin filters, plugs etc.)

OP, what would you think would necessitate and ECU update? The first thing I'd do is understand if your maintenance is up-to-date vs. any of the electric/computer related items.
If it's a new to you car, do the items on the thread about my vehicle (filters, fluids, plugs, etc...), then start figuring out the mods you'll need to ensure you car continues to run well.

Thanks Raj, this was more out of curiosity and not a necessity. A new car means I stockpile all the info and categorize it in priorities. Simply put, I've never had to update any kind of software on a vehicle so I figured I should get to the bottom of it.
Before oil and filters, I have to find out if my heads are warped, block cracked, timing out and a leaky fuel injector 😂
