Check engine light: Camshaft Position Sensor (G301) P039
Hi all,
About a week ago my check engine light came on. Hooked up VCDS and it gave a few odd codes including camshaft position sensor. But everything seemed to be running fine so I cleared the codes to see if they would come back.
Sure enough, in a few days they have returned. I have noticed on a couple occasion that the engine runs rough after slowing to a stop, but letting off the gas and easing forward seems to cure the symptom. Highway speeds are fine, no rough idle (besides the couple times mentioned), no noise on cold start.
Pasted the codes below for reference. Any thoughts on where to start on this one? Ignore the battery communication issue, that's a separate problem I'm tracking down....
3 Faults Found:
049425 - No Communication with Battery Energy Control Module U0111 - 009 - Open or Short to Ground Freeze Frame: Fault Status: 01100100 Fault Priority: 4 Fault Frequency: 11 Reset Counter: 40 Mileage: 177375 km Time Indication: 0 Date: 2014.05.04 Time: 10:42:02 RPM: 1792 /min Mass Air / Rev.: 196.2 mg/str Temperature: 25.5°C : Idle Voltage: 13.77 V Speed: 0.0 km/h

Thanks!

- Are the 2 codes (P0024 and P0391) likely related to the same bad component?
- Is it reasonable to suspect that a bad sensor and/or solenoid would also cause intermittent rough idle?
- What are the risks of continuing to drive the car while I diagnose the issue?
Also, does anyone have any info/photos on where the sensors and solenoids are located? I've never dealt with either of these before, so any pointing in the right direction is appreciated.
Finally - I'm sure the code indicates exactly which location is throwing the code - is there a "map" that shows which one is "Bank2 - Camshaft B"?
Thanks for the help,
Chris

It is quite possible that the rough idle is also related.
I would not drive the car until it is resolved.
Bank 2 is driver's side. Camshaft B is exhaust (says so on your codes too).

you should put a meter on it andd it should read either 1-3ohms or less, or OL. High resistance in a sensor like this is a sure sign of needing to be replaced. there are two types of cam sensors and that is why the two very different readings. If you can get your hands on a scan tool, check and see if the cam sensor is being picked up. More than likely you will need to take it to a good shop, this is not an all day job. If you want to throw parts at it, just swap it out with a new one.

Hi, cmwerner! Look.... here is my data.
Group 093: Camshaft Adjustment (Adaption Values)
1.1°KW Phase Position Intake Bank 1
7.9°KW Phase Position Intake Bank 2
2.6°KW Phase Position Exhaust Bank 1
0.8°KW Phase Position Exhaust Bank 2
I think our bugs is elongated chain in Bank 2. What do you think about this?

For Bank 1 you have a phase of 3 and for Bank 2 it's <b>11.6</b>, which is outside of spec. It appears you might have some excessive chain stretch.
