Known issues with '06 A6 3.2 & extended warranty questions
I own a 2006 A6 3.2 Quattro with approx 49K miles on the odometer. I'm the original owner and the car was always serviced at my local Audi dealership, Audi of Mission Viejo, since it had the service warranty. I took it in recently for some minor repair and the dealer tried selling me an extended warranty on the car. They offered me the RESERVE COVERAGE (http://www.aulcorp.com/aul_plans.html) policy that is offered by a company called AUL Administration, which would extend my warranty by another 4 yrs or 50K miles. The policy cost is approx $3.5K.
With that said, can you please let me know your thoughts on this extended warranty? If not this policy, can you recommend another company/policy that might be a better option? Also, can you please let me know of some known issues with my type of car? That might help me with trying to determine if I should buy the policy or simply risk it.
Thank you ahead of time for your input and I would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year!
Best,
PM

It's a good warranty. It is exclusionary, meaning it is as close as you can get to original factory new-car coverage, so it will cover any electrical or mechanical breakdown except for what it listed in the exclusions section of the contract.
The plan I offer to AW members is similar, although a better deal. It's also exclusionary, but it lasts 5 years and 50K miles instead of four, and even though it's a year longer, it is $300 less expensive.
Hard to say with the C6 as to if it will pay off as a good investment compared to banking the money. Typcially Audis are afflicted with some pricey electronic and electrical gremlins over time, but most C6's are still under original factory coverage to there's not a lot of data yet.
It's not hard to reach or exceed $3K in claims on an Audi in 5 years with an exclusionary policy, so I don't see it being a bad investment. But exactly how it will compare to banking the money I can't say. I do know that there are lots of Allroad and RS6 guys with $10K+ in claims that still have time left on their warranties.
The A6 is no RS6 in reliability, for sure, but a pixelated instrument cluster, a couple of control arms/bushings, a seat heater element, and maybe something else like a starter or alternator, over the course of 5 years, gets you to $3K in pretty short order. So it does not take much to get there!
