Default p0391

Car was running on highway fine for 50 miles. when I got into town it was running a little rough no check engine light. I shut it off and started and the light came on solid. I drove it home about 50 miles on highway runs smooth at red light it shakes. I pulled a code P0391 with my vag com I pulled this which is troubling which I will post below. I tried swapping what I thought were the camshaft sensors think I got the correct ones. What about the solenoids I saw a mention of this in an earlier post with this issue . I then pulled up codes P300 P304 P305 P306 and P0391 The chains DO NOT rattle Car has 76k miles and have owned it for since it had 6k miles and about 7 years. Is this terminal? Any thoughts welcome

Did you have the engine running when you did these measurements? Those values are only calculated on engine start when the crankshaft syncs with the camshafts.

Measuring block 93 will give you the phase values for the camshafts relative to the crankshaft. 0 would mean perfect synchronization.

Looking at block 93 I see that the phase position for bank 1 is -1.1 and phase position for bank 2 is 1.5. From previous threads I think 8 is the service limit for the timing system and you are at 0.4, which is great for your intake.

However, there is a CLEAR issue with your exhaust bank.

update. ..

I decided to swap the exhaust camshaft control valve/solenoid Buy Camshaft Solenoid Control Valve (3.2L/4.2L, Latest Revision) - 06E109257P by Genuine OEM | Europa Parts since it was an exhaust issue. When I removed the bank2 valve it broke in two so I needed a new one. Luckily I called two nearby dealers and the second had it in stock. I paid 238 with tax but glad that it work. I put it in and car runs great. I took it on a 10 mile run. I rescanned the engine and this is the results I got.

Another screen mesh jamming the solenoid... Your adjustment values look normal now. You should also log blocks 91 & 92 when driving, under load, see if the other solenoids respond properly to the timing numbers the engine is calling for. They should go in sync with almost no difference. A faulty solenoid with crap in it might adjust correctly for idle and certain rpms and go crazy at other rpms so check the whole range.

I will as soon as I can get wife to drive it. I am new to this vag com stuff. You want me to do the same scan using measuring block 91 and 92 correct? Also the solenoid looked remarkably clean Just an fyi I changed oil at 6k, 15k,21k,26k,34k,43k, 52k,61k,70k. I probably changed it to much. Ill probably do 9k going foward. I use mobil1 0-w40 btw

Block 91 and 92 are bank 1 and 2. You will have two sets of number in şkw. The first set is what adjustment the engine is calling for and the second one is the actual adjustment. IF the engine is calling for a specific adjustment and if the hydraulic adjusters do not respond accordingly do not drive the car! I am not saying you should have identical numbers, so 18.5 specified by the engine and 18.1 current adjustment would be OK just keep an eye for big differences, for example when engine is calling for 10 and you have a value of 18.

Oil changes. This is another can of worms. Mobil 1 0w40 sythetic is good and approved for our engines. I prefer Castrol, Mobil one makes my engine sound louder much quicker and oil seems to thin out and darkens in half the miles Castrol does. Of course I have no scientific facts to back that up, just my own observations. I suspect mobil1 being manufactured for US markets, although it says fully synthetic it might be a "blend" unlike Castrol made in EU which is true synthetic.

The continuous adjustment values for bank 1 & 2 are on are on blocks 90 & 98 IIRC. log them as well.
Drive around the block and than examine the log file at home.

You scan while driving. Start the engine, on VCDS Go to engine, measurement blocks and enter block 90, 91, 92 in each group row. (you can only look 3 groups at a time but if you want you can also look at 98 later which is the one you replaced, so don't bother too much about that) Bottom right corner of the page you have the "LOG" button. When you start logging It will take second by second snapshots of the adjustments as you drive and store it in a file. Drive around when you are done, Stop, save the file and than you can analyze whether the camshafts are adjusting at different times. If you see the actual KW doesn't match the specified KW than that particular solenoid needs replacing too.

P.S. You can't see any values on the groups or start logging if the engine is not running.
