Your '04 A6 is a C5 platform, but you probably have a failing vehicle speed sensor. Per ETKA 7, it is mounted on the driver's side differential case at about the 1 o'clock position. P/N is 012–409–191–D.

On B6 A4s and some late model C5's the Left front wheel speed sensor is for the speedometer input. It goes to the ABS module, then is sent to the instrument cluster and ECU. If the sensor is good, the wiring from the sensor to the module is good, then its the module. Seen it 3 times so far be the module on 03+ Audis.

There are significant differences between the C6 and C5 platforms:

* C6 has larger body dimensions than a C5
* C6 standard engine is the 3.2L FSI V6 with no timing belt while the C5 had several engines: 2.8L 30V V6, 3.0L V6, 2.7L Biturbo V6 (none of whoch had the direct injection system [FSI], but all had timing belts). 4.2L V8s were available in both the C5 and C6.
* C6 is only offered in NA with only a 6-speed Tiptronic (automatic), C5 was offered with both 5 & 6 speed manual transmissions and 4 & 5 speed automatic transmissions.
* C6 standard wheels are 17 inch, C5 standard wheels were 15 inch.
