Default I remember that thread a while back ...

on A8/S8 Tip and manual gearing, intermediate gears, and final drives. Skiwi's post clears this up nicely.

Default Re: transmission ratios (updated)

thanks jim,

the actual transmission ratios of the 5-speed zf 5hp24 and 24a auto are as follows:

1: 3.57
2: 2.20
3: 1.51
4: 1.00
5: 0.80
r: -4.10

remember also that the rearwards drive also has a drop grear to get the rear driveshaft, (as with the front), beneath the gearbox mainshaft. this is specific for the 24a transmission which is awd, rather than the 5hp24 transmission which is for longitudional rear-drive appications (i.e. bmw and m-b).

the gear ratios for the intermediate & final gears for common a8 gearboxes (the s8 is an fbg) are as follows:

front (input/output): fbe: 29/29, fbf: 29/29, fbg: 29/35
front diff: fbe: 32/11, fbf: 30/11, fbg: 34/11
rear intermediate: fbe: 37/29, fbf: 38/28, fbg: 32/29
rear diff: fbe: 37/10, fbf: 37/10, fbg: 37/9

btw jim, the orange m8d has a lot of reasonance for this kiwi boy - just old enough to remember the bruce & denny show ;-)

dave

Default It's always been my tribute to Bruce and his accomplishments ...

... and I put together the NZ and "kiwi" reference :-).

I spent many days of my youth at SCCA Can-Am, Trans-Am, and amateur events at Mid-Ohio, Road America, and IRP.

Owning a McLaren M8D, M8F, or M20 is one of my goals, but I will probably never be able to own one that was actually driven by Bruce, Denny, Peter, Gurney or Hobbs. Those have become quite pricey in the vintage racing fraternity.

Come to think of it ... an M20 will probably be impossible, I believe one was recently destroyed and there were only three to begin with ???

Finally, count me as one of the "Mika the Flying Finn" fanatics, and I will be cheering for Kimi today.

Default Additional ratio questions

If I understand correctly, you have confirmed that the US auto transmission S8's and the euro manual transmission S8's all have the same 4.11 (37/9) rear diff ring and pinion.

So -

If I wanted to convert an A8 to a manual transmission, I can take -any- S8 rear diff and source a manual transmission from an S4 (knowing that there are additional parts to procure)?

I'm working under the assumption that the manual tranny S4's are documented as having a 4.11 effective.

Default Re: ratio questions - the s8 6-speed

yes, all s8's came with the 37/9 rear diff (the euu - also specified for the s6).

if you work though the numbers i posted, you will see that the ratios work out correct to 4 decimal places - close enough (0.02%)

for the s4, it is pretty straight forward, all s4/rs4 quattro 6-speeds came with the 37/9 ratio (as they did in the s8). all are 01e transmissions. beware however that there are 6-speed transmissions with 35/9, and with 35/8 ratios - these are the ones for the tdi diesel cars, some of these are quattro so be careful!

you might have some fun fitting them to the a8 though - i can't help you there...

i'd be tempted to hunt for a dgv (to 6/2001), or frn (7/01-9/02) 6-speed 01e transmission from an s8...

rather than repeat information about the 01e here, i would refer the reader to charlie smith's excellent article on the various forms of the 01e 6-speed - initially produced for the s2, followed quickly thereafter by the rs2 and then others...

http://www.elektro.com/~audi/01E/

bear in mind that the s4 auto, is not a 5hp24a unit, it is a 5hp19a unit, so has different internal ratios than the ones i have posted...

D3 the same as D2? I think not, is the D3 4.2 not a 6 speed? 6HP26?

I think the D3 S8 V10 uses a 5hp24 but I dunno the ratios, not sure if that'd interchange with some of the D2 5HP24 transmissions.

Default A8 D3 tranny the same for 04 to 06?

I think there was a mistake in my post. I.may have accidentally copied another person's question.
my question was about the comparison of the 04-06 A8 D3 tranny. They should be the same .....correct? They are 4.2 v8's
