Ignition Problem
I have a 2001 S8. When I got into the car and put the key in the ignition it just turned freely and did not go to the "on" or "start" position. The instrument cluster did not light up. The key turned to these positions but did not click or stop at the respective positions. Any suggestions?

I'm having the same issue. I first thought ignition switch (the electrical part) but upon disassembly it looks like when you turn the key, it doesn't turn the piece that fits into the electrical switch. Thus, it's not cheap common fix of just replacing that switch.
Found this video detailing the disassembly and reassembly of the lock mechanism. Going to pull mine apart tonight, figure out whats broken, then take a trip to the local wrecker and find a replacement. Looks like they used the same lock assembly on tons of VW/Audi models.
Edit:
Upon full disassembly I found the culprit.
I pulled the lock cylinder out of a MK4 VW, from the outside they looked identical and used the same electronic ignition switch, the piece that is broken off on mine was a slightly different shape though. Trying to find one locally because I need my car back on the road pronto, but might be forced to buy a whole new assembly.

Edit again, ended up ordering a new lock cylinder. Nothing local and I like the piece of mind with having a new part in there.
