rack growl?
Gents,
Any of you experience rack growl in hot weather? I noticed a slight growl in the spring but now that its 90 and humid as hell, I get a very discernable growl when turning steering wheel. Steering doesn't jump or become more resistant... Just growls.
Thanks guys!
Chris

How is the fluid level? Any leaks?
I recently had a horrible leak from the drivers inner tie rod boot. The leak was preceded a few weeks/month by a squeal/squeak when turning the wheel. Not sure if it's the same as a growl...
Removed the rack and had the seals R&R'd for only $50.
We originally thought the noise was from the new outer tie rod end being out of grease.

it usually growls when it cavitates, due to low fluid or bad fluid. Try draining/flushing the ps fluid and use the Audi dealer stuff not the cheap crap. It makes a big difference !

AudiNut and others,
So I tried the bleeding procedure 1st. Cap and engine off, front wheels off ground. Turned lock to lock 10 times.
Then... Cap off, engine on... Turned lock to lock 10 times.
Drove home last night to no noise. :-)
So, this am I am driving into work. Guess what... Noise is back. :-(
So, one of two things. Either I am sucking air in from supply or return line or fluid is bad.
Fluid was low when I bought car. I added the Pentosin mineral based fluid.
Seems that thus noise is a lot more apparent when its hot outside. Colder weather doesn't seem to cause this.
I found a flushing procedure from Audipages.com. Do I have to use the Audi fluid? The Pentosin fluid is compatible with our systems so I was planning on using that for the flush and refill.
Thoughts and suggestions are welcome and appreciated.

when l recently had the new seals put in the rack l used Pentosin CHF 11S for the refill and the 8 works great.
I personally always look elsewhere than what the manufacturer sells cuz it almost invariably falls into the "expensive" category and l'll typically look for a solution that is just as good but more in line w/ my wallet
